Our £3.5 billion plan to revolutionise the Midlands rail network and supercharge the region’s economy, creating space for more than 700 extra passenger trains each day, improving services for more than 60 locations across the region.

Integrated with HS2, our plans are designed to drive sustainability, productivity and social mobility across the Midlands.

Our flagship rail project; a £2 billion package of improvements that will create space for faster, more frequent passenger services between our economic centres, and 72 extra freight trains through the region each day.

Our plan to improve access to Birmingham Airport on the conventional network, with better connections from the south of England, East Midlands, Yorkshire and the North East.

It is essential that the Midlands makes the most of its new high speed rail infrastructure. We are investigating the potential for additional conventional compatible trains to serve the city centres of Nottingham and Leicester, boosting east-west and north-south links.

Communities across the East Midlands must be able to access their new HS2 hub station at Toton quickly and efficiently. We are working with partners to examine what modes and methods of transport will best link users to the station.

We are investigating the feasibility of doubling the frequency of services along this east west corridor, and cutting journey times. Our plans have the potential to significantly increase demand on the line and encourage more people to travel by train instead of use their cars.

We are working with West Midlands Rail Executive to examine the case for increasing the number of trains on the corridor from three to four, made possible by capacity released post-HS2.

Slow and infrequent rail services between Nottingham and Lincoln mean only a small proportion of journeys on this corridor are made by train. We are working to understand how the speed and frequency of services can be improved, while delivering a good return on investment.
